Dear Parent/Guardian:

As we begin a new school year, I am asking for your help in assuring that your child attends school every day and arrives on time. In an effort to promote collaboration between home and school, we are asking for your support. The policy at the McGlynn Elementary School is for you to call or e-mail our secretaries, Sheila Christensen or Maureen Richard, if your child is absent. You can call 781-393-2333 or send an email to schristensen@medford.k12.ma.us or mrichard@medford.k12.ma.us. Unexcused absences and tardies will be closely monitored. It is very important that your child be present in school in order to have a successful year.

If your child has 5 unexcused absences, you will receive a Level I absence letter and a call from the Assistant Principal. If your child has 10 unexcused absences, you will receive a Level II absence letter and receive a call from the Assistant Principal. The classroom teacher will also be notifying you about continuous absences. If your child exceeds 10 unexcused absences, you will receive a Level III absence letter and must meet with the Principal. A report may be sent to the attendance officer and Social Services may be notified.

Excessive absences or tardies means that your child has missed classroom teaching, which could translate into a lack of basic knowledge, continuity of instruction, poor test grades, and questions about promotion to the next grade level. Please let the office know if we have overlooked an important reason for these absences/tardies. Children are not recorded tardy when the school bus is late.

Last year, one of the biggest reasons for unexcused absences was family travel outside of the school vacation weeks. These absences are not excused and seriously impact your child’s learning, as well as our goal to be an excellent school.

Thank you for your cooperation in this very important matter.

Sincerely yours,
Diane M. Guarino
Assistant Principal
