City of Medford Summer Recreation Program

Thursday, June 1st, 2017

Mayor Stephanie M. Burke is excited to announce the 2017 Summer Recreation Program. Registration is now open for over 20 athletic and hands-on programs.

Athletic clinics include soccer, flag football, softball, swimming and more for ages ranging from 3 to adults. Hands-on programs introduce youth ages 5-14 to creative activities such as computing, filmmaking, Lego workshops, rocket-making and more.

Medford’s popular 6-week Parks Program is also returning, giving youth an opportunity to get outside and play from 9am-1pm each day from July 10 to August 18. This year, all activities will take place in a different single park throughout Medford each week, bringing all youth together in one location. Activities will include sports, games, crafts, and more and the park locations will be Harris Park, Barry Park, Carr Park, Tufts Park, Morrison Park, and Playstead Park. The Free Lunch Program will provide youth ages 18 and under with lunch at no-cost at five of the six locations. (There will be no free lunch at Playstead Park).

Residents are also invited to get out and cool off at Wright’s Pond and Tufts Pool which are scheduled to open on June 24. Wright’s Pond is open to residents only, and vehicle and walk-in passes will be on sale beginning June 1st. Tufts Pool is open to residents and non-residents, and family and individual passes will also be on sale on June 1st. All passes can be purchased online at www.medfordma.org/summer, by mail, or in the Treasurer/Collector’s Office at Medford City Hall during normal operating hours: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:30am to 4:30pm; Wednesdays from 8:30am to 7:30pm, and Fridays from 8:30am to 12:30pm. Burke. “We’re excited to incorporate this feedback into our summer program, and will be proposing during budget cycle a full-time Recreation Department for the fall of 2017 which will offer year-round programming and will further incorporate the important feedback from the community gathered in the survey.”

Medford Early Education Program

The MEEP programs are located at Medford High School, and the Brooks, Columbus, and Roberts Elementary Schools. The Medford Public Schools Early Education Program (MEEP) recognizes the primary goal of early childhood education is to promote independence, self-confidence, self-esteem, and an enthusiasm for learning. These qualities are essential to future educational success.

MEEP is designed to provide children with a safe, secure and nurturing environment in which children can learn about themselves, each other, and the world around them. The curriculum utilizes a developmental approach based on well-established principles of development. It addresses the whole child in areas including the development of cognition, communication, language, social interaction, play skills, motor abilities, and self-help skills. Children are encouraged and taught to make choices among a range of activities, especially those that are based on their own interests and experiences.

The daily schedule is intended to balance indoor and outdoor periods, active and quiet times, and individual, small group, and whole group activities. The curriculum offers children opportunities for experience with paint, clay, water, sand, blocks, puzzles, a wide variety of manipulatives, music, movement, books, dramatic play, and cooking to name a few.

A major component of the preschool program is to help children develop positive self-esteem and an enjoyment of learning. Much emphasis is placed on the child’s capacity to develop and enjoy friendships, to begin to learn to resolve conflicts, and to learn respect for the feeling, ideas, and differences of others. The program values each child’s unique abilities and facilitates development at a pace and level consistent with each child’s ability.

MEEP is an integrated preschool setting that serves children who are ages 3 through 5 and not yet eligible for kindergarten. There are up to 15 children in each class. Eight children are developing typically and 7 have been identified with special needs. Each class has a teacher, at least 2 other staff members, and therapists. Some classrooms also have high school interns.
