Congratulations to the boys varsity hockey team for clinching the GBL title with a 5-1 win at Somerville Wednesday night. The Mustangs are undefeated in the GBL with five wins and are 7-7 overall.

“Congrats to every player in the program. Winning the GBL and qualifying for the state tourney are the first two goals we have in place for ourselves. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the way these kids conduct themselves every day. They genuinely care about each other and it is a pleasure to be around them. I am very happy for them!” Said Head Coach Steve DeBenedictis.

Both the offense and defense really came together to pull out a decisive win over Somerville. Coach DeBenedictis credited the defense for keeping up the pressure.

“We did a good job playing a smart, solid third period…I thought our Dmen had one of their better games this year. Charlie Chouinard has been very strong lately along with Brian Whooley. I thought Will Brennan made good solid decisions transitioning the puck, and Paul Zizzo had his best game of the year. Kevin Nazzaro also saw important minutes tonight and played well. Those guys get a lot of grief from me, so it was nice to be able to tell them how well they played,” said DeBenedictis.

The game was 2-1 at the end of the first period. Derek Mecrones, assisted by Zizzo and Brett Mecrones, scored an early goal on a breakaway. Jon Nazzaro (Tyler Zizzo, Brett Mecrones) made it 2-0 when Mecrones made a great cross-ice pass to send Nazzaro in alone, who finished with a nice shot short-side.

“Brett made a great play just before his line was coming off the ice. A lot of kids would have dumped the puck in, but he showed nice awareness seeing Jon wide and hit him in stride,” said Coach DeBenedictis.

Somerville managed to squeeze in its lone goal at the very end of the first period. When the Mustangs came into the second period they “did a nice job re-establishing themselves” after Somerville’s goal and didn’t let up. Tyler Zizzo (Brian Enos) made it 3-1 at 4:18 with a shot through a screen after Enos made a nice pass to free him up while DJ Galvin made it 4-1 at 6:33 from the slot after intercepting a pass.

“I was happy to see DJ make a strong play. He has so much talent and I’ve been on him pretty good lately, so it was nice to see him respond,” said DeBenedictis.

Nazzaro (Jake Porrazzo, Chouinard) completed the scoring on a power play goal at 13:05.

It was a “bit of a quiet night” in goal for Jimmy Cecchini, who “continues to be solid” while only allowing just over two goals per game, said Coach DeBenedictis.

Medford hosts Everett at 5PM on Saturday and is on the road against Arlington on Monday.

Both the Medford School Committee and City Council unanimously approved a $3.3 million technology upgrade for our schools.

A huge thank you goes out to the technology committee for their nearly two years of work and to all of the parents, students, school staff, community members, and others who supported this project.

The technology upgrade is part of a larger capital improvement bond for the city that includes several important projects.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Monday, January 2, 2012, Mayor Michael McGlynn said the following about the technology upgrade:

“This year, our schools will begin a major upgrade of its technological capacity. This initiative addresses all the key components recommended by the technology advisory committee and sets a foundation for an ongoing commitment to effective teaching and learning, including:

A wireless network throughout the district allowing for state of the art work stations for all teachers.

Wireless mobile computer carts allowing interactive classroom instruction and projection capabilities linked to the internet.

Libraries with additional workstations to accommodate group research along with additional computer labs to enable differentiated instruction.

Additional devices at all schools enabling universal access to all learners and administrative workstations upgraded to handle data management and reporting.

This 3.3 million dollar investment will allow our students to become familiar with the online course requirements, and facilitate their access to the expanding digital world.”

The $3.3 million investment includes district-wide wireless; new teacher/specialist computers and printers; new projectors K-12; new computers (and more of them) in our libraries and additional computer labs at each school for teachers to use; wireless device carts at each school; and one student computer in every classroom.

Upgrade Information

Information: The Step Squad is open to all students, male or female, experienced and newcomers as well. Our primary goal is to promote school spirit and unity. No dance experience is necessary; however, we encourage all members to make a commitment to the squad. Stepping is a fusion of African and African American music and dance traditions that incorporate high-energy cheerleading, acrobatics, gymnastics, and drill team moves. Rhymes or chants are sometimes spoken over the dance as well. It is performance art that combines dance with music and show. Stepping involves clapping and stomping, sometimes done at the same time. It is similar to tap in that the steppers use their bodies to make the rhythms, as opposed to using musical instruments to produce sounds, beats and rhythms. Step consists of elaborate synchronized group routines that are usually performed at school events as well as in competitions. Our group choreographs and performs original step routines. The student choreographed routines incorporate cheerleading as well as drill team type precise moves, especially the call-and-response element inherent in those forms. These aspects are not only important to the energy of stepping for entertainment use, but also for bonding and pride within our step squad.

Dr. Paul Krueger, headmaster at Medford High School, announced the names of Steering Committee members who will direct the school’s efforts during its self-study and accreditation by the Commission on Public Secondary Schools of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The committee will be co-chaired by teachers Candace Van Aken and Nick Tucci.

The other members of the committee are: MHS teachers David Ambrose, Douglas Bowen-Flynn, Audrey Carmosino; Vocational school teacher Rich Cormio, Sub-Master Rosemary Trainor, and Dr. Krueger.

NEASC membership requires that a school undergo a self-study and formal evaluation at least once every ten years. The steering committee’s responsibilities will include coordinating a schedule of events for the self-study, collecting reports from various sub-committees, and making necessary preparations for the evaluation committee’s visit.

“The self-study will include the completion of a comprehensive assessment of teaching and learning and the support of teaching and learning. The focus of the evaluation visit will be to determine the extent to which our programs and services carry out the school’s core values and beliefs and meet the Commission’s Standards for Accreditation,” said Van Aken.

The school was last accredited in 2002.
