McGlynn Elementary School Principal Pat Buker

To: McGlynn Elementary Families and Citizens of Medford,

Part of me feels as if it was only last year that I walked through the door of the Fulton School and into the first classroom that was truly mine – truly my responsibility. I also found out that at the young age of just 21, I would be responsible for educating 92 four and five year old children who were split into AM and PM Kindergarten sessions. From that first day on, I have loved every minute of my tenure in the Medford Public Schools.

Nevertheless, I will be retiring on June 30th of this year.

It has been my privilege, over the past forty years, to witness and be a part of education in our City. Sometimes shocked, sometimes worried, sometimes amazed, sometimes encouraged, and frequently overjoyed, I have watched and taught and been a part of the lives of over 1,200 children, and if I must make sense of it all — if there must be something I have learned from it – then I have an answer for myself, an answer that will satisfy me as I look back.

In all that time, one thing has been consistent and remains consistent – children respond to love. From the first to the last, from the outgoing to the shy, from the privileged to the less fortunate, children have responded to love, do respond to love, and, I’m certain, will continue to respond to love as long as there are parents and children; as long as there are students and teachers; as long as the human spirit continues to reach out into the world.

In my four decade “stretch” in the elementary school, I have experienced much and learned much. I know I will remember what I have learned, but it will be secondary to the love I have received from the children who shared these premises with me, some of whom have their own children in school even now. That love remembered is what has made my forty years so precious; that love given and received has made them glorious.

It has been superb! Thank you for being a part of it all.

Sincerely,

Patricia Hafner Buker
Principal
John J. McGlynn Elementary

The Connecting Activities career/jobs program at Medford High School paves the way to positive career pathways by offering individual and classroom-based assistance. The program provides one-on-one job-readiness preparation including résumé writing, interviewing techniques, workplace etiquette, and communication skills. Students develop plans for their future through self-assessment activities and career planning. Participants learn about career opportunities by attending company tours, job shadow events and guest speaker forums. Students gain hands-on work experience with the program’s job placement assistance and internship opportunities.

We need your help!

Connecting Activities staff are seeking opportunities in the local business community to assist Medford High youth.

Ways you can participate:

Guest Speakers/Workshops -Speak to a class of high school students about your occupation and the skills they need in the job or any subject of your choice.

Job Shadows -Allow a student to shadow your business for a few hours observing and assisting with work.

Guided Tours of Your Business -Host a tour of your company for a student and/or teacher group.

Part-time and Summer Employment for Students – Provide students with the opportunity to gain experience through a part-time or summer job.

Student Internships – Provide an opportunity for students to gain practical experience with a 20-hour internship to run over the course of a school year.

The Connecting Activities program at Medford High School is operated with grant funding through The Career Place, a Massachusetts One-Stop Career Center based in Woburn. Visit careerplacejobs.com, or contact a TCP youth counselor:

The MHS PTO has organized the first ever prom dress swap this year and about 100 dresses have been donated.

The first “shopping” date was on February 27 and due to popular demand, two other dates have been planned for Thursday, March 11 and Wednesday, March 24 from 6:00PM-8:00pm. Meet in the faculty room off of the MHS library. It’s only $10 for a dress so the PTO can cover its dry-cleaning costs.

Check out some of our pictures from the February 27 shopping event:

The following report was submitted to the Medford School Committee by School Superintendent Roy Belson on the plan to select a new principal for the McGlynn Elementary School:

Ms. Patricia H. Buker has announced her retirement as Principal of the McGlynn Elementary School, effective June 30, 2010. Ms. Buker began her career in 1970, and will be completing forty years of service to the Medford Public Schools. She has served as a teacher, literacy coordinator, assistant principal, and principal. She is deserving of our gratitude and praise for her dedication to the children and families of Medford.

Her departure leaves a vacancy that must be filled in order to ensure that quality leadership and program management will continue at the McGlynn Elementary School. It is our plan to select a new principal in sufficient time to enable opportunities for a smooth transition and orientation. Also, the number of principal vacancies is growing across the Commonwealth, and it is important to attract qualified candidates before they accept opportunities elsewhere. Further, our screening and selection process require time, and we need to allow for sufficient input by stakeholders prior to a final decision.

Therefore, I will adhere to this timetable as closely as possible:

Advertisement of the position beginning March 2, 2010 through March 26, 2010

Administrative review of candidates through April 16, 2010

Advisory Committee interviews of semi-finalists completed by April 30, 2010

School Committee interviews the week of May 3, 2010

Selection by May 13, 2010

This process has worked for us in the past and has been well-received.

The Advisory Committee will include parents, teachers, staff and administrators, representative of the McGlynn Elementary, and the programs and services provided at that school.

The Challenger Division is a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities, ages 5-18 or the completion of high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.

Malden West Little League is part of District 12 along with Somerville, Medford, Melrose and Everett children who live in these areas are welcome to play.

The baseball program is in its fourth year and has had a Medford team participate each year. The practice/games are held on Sundays between 3-4pm and 4-5pm at the field in front of the Irish American club on the Fellsway on the Malden/Medford line. Each challenger player is assigned a baseball buddy to assist them (boy or girl) with baseball fundamentals.

The cost is $40.00. Each Challenger player receives a full uniform, participates in all opening day ceremonies, banquets, and fundraising events, which last year included many of the Challenger players winning batting practice and a full day at Fenway Park. Participation in the Challenger league also automatically qualifies the Challenger Player with a roster position on the Medford Invitational Tournament Challenger Allstars, which is held annually at Columbus Park in the summer.
