After rainy weather screwed with the schedule for the last two weeks, the Mustang softball team earned a key 13-8 win over Everett on Wednesday at Columbus Park in Medford.

It was a must-win situation for the Mustangs, who need to either finish first or second in the league or earn at least .500 record to qualify for the state tournament. The Medford girls came up big by defeating the Everett nine, who are 11-3 overall but are a game behind the Mustangs in the GBL, according to Head Coach Jack Dempsey. Medford is now 3-2 in the GBL and 3-7 overall.

Senior captain Shannon Hussey and junior Katie Napier, the first and second batters in the Mustang order, each banged out five hits. Hussey scored four runs, had three RBI’s and stole three bases. Napier scored two runs and contributed two RBI’s along with two steals. Senior captain Jackie Pellecchia contributed two hits, two RBI’s and four stolen bases, junior Sam Lopilato and sophomore Sarah Donnelly each had a pair of hits and two RBI’s, and senior captain Emily Welch had a single, an RBI and a stolen base.

Senior captain Rayanne Staude went the distance on the mound for the Mustangs, striking out six batters for her third win of the season.

The Lady Mustangs have a daunting schedule ahead of them. They head to Everett on Thursday afternoon before commencing a nine games in nine days schedule, starting with a Sunday game under the lights at Columbus Park against perennial power Concord Carlisle.

The ninth annual Andrews Middle School River Day is taking place on Friday, May 18. This year’s theme is “A Day in the Life of the Mystic River.”

River Day is a school-based event dedicated to educating students about the Mystic River. On this day each grade spends approximately 90 minutes on the school grounds visiting different learning stations exploring an activity related to the river.

River Day draws upon experts and expert volunteers from the surrounding community, Tufts University, government and non-profit institutions. These individuals take responsibility for teaching about one element of river life as it relates to the current year’s theme, using hands-on or interactive displays. This year’s stations are:

Fish Prints: Stephanie Todhunter

Bird Watching/Photography: John Harrison

Invasive Plant Species: Alexandra Erchandi, Department of Conservation and Recreation

Mystic River Trivia: Vicki Halal

Water Safety: Officer Patrick Johnston

Environmental Water Topic: Don Walker

Recycling: Carey Duques

Exercise/Health Along the River: Nicole Tehrany & Kim Talbot

River Day is a project of parent volunteers at the Andrews school who identify a theme, put together the program and recruit presenters. This year’s coordinator is Pauline Fiore.

Medford Public Schools has recently adopted a new computerized Point of Sale payment system for all school meals purchased in the High School cafeterias.

The first day of service for this new system will be Wednesday, May 23, 2012 beginning at breakfast. We would like to take the time to introduce this system to all parents and to describe the upcoming services that will be provided. The first few days the lunch lines may be slower, but as the students familiarize themselves with the system, the lines should move much quicker than before. Breakfast will be included on the same system.

Every student will have their own personal meal account based on their current student ID number. Students can access their accounts with their Student ID cards. In the event that they have no card they can use their student ID number. We are assuming that all students know their student ID number used for academic eligibility, but if they forget, we can access it through every register. It is strongly recommended that all students bring their ID’s and if not remember their numbers, as this will make the meal lines move faster. Please make sure that your student does NOT share their ID number.

We encourage parents to deposit money into the student’s account, although they may still pay cash. Monies paid into a student account can be used for the purchase of regular, alternative meals and a-la-carte items. When sending in money by check or cash, please include the student’s ID number on the check or envelope so it is deposited into the correct account. This system allows students to charge only if there is money in their account – we won’t allow any negative balances to occur. Beginning in school year 2012-2013 we will have an online payment system.

If your student has qualified for free or reduced price lunches or breakfasts, this information is securely contained within the system and the meal will be processed just as it is for all other students. There is no need to be concerned for a potentially uncomfortable situation for the student.

If you are concerned about a food allergy that your student has, please notify the cafeteria with this information. A warning will appear on the cashier’s screen for a quick review of the items on the student’s meal tray.

Thank you in advance for your patience in implementing this system.

Features of the Computerized System

Benefits for Parents and Students

When the account is prepaid you can be sure that your student is only using that money for nutritious lunches/breakfasts served in our cafeteria.

Lunch is defined as a choice of entrée, milk choice, and up to four side dishes available to all students.

Prepaid accounts for all students allows parents to deposit money in their student’s account, in any amount, at any time, without concerns about giving their student the exact change every morning.

For those students receiving free or reduced meals, their meals will be rung up as all the other meals are. No one will know whether they are receiving a free or reduced meal or debiting their account, except for the cashier.

Lunch lines move faster when meals are prepaid, thus providing students extra time to enjoy their lunch period.

Parents can pay any amount at any time. Students can prepay on the line with cash or parents can send in checks (with the student ID# on it), and students can give this to the cashier right in the lunch line. You are only charged for the lunches/breakfasts and or snacks that are debited to your student’s ID academic eligibility number. All student ID numbers are confidential.

Pin pads are located at every terminal; they provide ease of use and allow for quick transactions.

Prepayment allows for better security rather than cash.

Once the transaction has been completed, your student will know his/her account balance.

Students may use any register. When a lunch or breakfast is recorded at one register, it will automatically be recorded on the other registers.

When student accounts get low, students will be informed at the register of their balance.

Pre-Payment Options

You can send in prepayment monies at any time. We recommend that parents send in checks rather than cash. All monies should be submitted only to cafeteria personnel.

Regular lunches cost $2.85 and alternative lunches cost $3.50 served on Wednesday and Friday. Breakfast costs $1.00 Reduced breakfasts are $.30 and Reduced lunch is $.40 each.

Checks are to be made payable to Medford School Lunch Account.

When sending a prepayment, please include the student’s ID# on the face of the check. If you send in cash please indicate on the face of the envelope, the student’s ID#.

Beginning in school year 2012-2013 we will be using an online payment system. Watch for further information beginning in the school year and on the school web.

If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the office of School Lunch at 781-393-2241.

May 8, 2012

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the end of the year is fast approaching, we have several exciting activities planned for our grade eight students. We have confirmed the following dates:

May 10-11 Math MCAS

May 15-16 Science/Technology MCAS

May 25 Career Day

May 29 Franklin Park Zoo Field Trip

June 8-10 NYC Trip

June 8 Activities planned for students not attending NYC

June 12-13 Final Exams

June 14 Canobie Lake Park Trip

June 15 Rock-n-Roll Show (Canobie Lake Rain Date)

June 19 Graduation and Student Dinner/Dance

With the help of the McGlynn Middle School PTO and our fund-raising this year, we are able to offer all of these activities for just $25 per student (excluding Franklin Park). This money will help to pay for tickets to Canobie Lake, transportation to and from Canobie Lake, food for the grade 8 dinner/dance, and other miscellaneous costs related to the graduation ceremony. Keep in mind, admission alone to Canobie Lake costs $24 per student! We understand that requesting money is an inconvenience, however, we want to make the end of your child’s middle school experience a memorable one.

Students are asked to pay in full by Friday, June 1. Students who choose not to attend Canobie Lake will be asked to make a $10 contribution for the graduation ceremony and dinner/dance.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions and/or concerns. We thank you in advance for your support.

Regards,

McGlynn Middle School Grade 8 Staff

April was national Financial Literacy Month, a perfect time to teach kids about money. Cambridge Savings Bank brought the “Teach Children to Save” Initiative to the Roberts Elementary School in Medford last Tuesday.

Robert’s kindergarten students were read the Berenstain Bears’ Trouble with Money book by bank employee Asrate Sahlu and then discussed the money concepts they learned from the story, including saving, spending, sharing, income and interest.

To encourage the habit of saving money at a young age, each child received a piggy bank, $1 in coins and a colorful coin chart on which they practiced comparing the values of different coins.

“Teach Children to Save,” an initiative of the American Bankers Association, is presented by Cambridge Savings in conjunction with their CSBsmart program. CSBsmart is the signature financial education initiative of Cambridge Savings Bank. Since its expansion in 2010, CSBsmart has delivered over 285 free lessons to more than 4,600 participants from all ages and walks of life – from kindergarteners to homeless war veterans.
