Amnesty International

Information: Amnesty International is a social activism club at Medford High School. The club follows the worldwide organization, Amnesty International. The club focuses on Amnesty campaigns and takes action by signing petitions, doing photo actions, letter writing, and most recently planning trips to Washington, D.C. to work on passing IVAWA, the International Violence Against Women Act. Information: The Mentoring Program is a collaboration between Grade 9 students and Grade 10, 11, and 12 students at Medford High School. Mentors demonstrate a strong capacity for individual service and high levels of personal character and academic success. All Grade 9 students are assigned a mentor. For the entire school year, mentors work with mentees informally in various ways during the school day. Please note that any current Grade 10, 11, or 12 student may apply to be a mentor. Information: Our mission is to create a friendly environment where new students feel welcome, safe, and confident. We are designed to aid transfer students in making a smooth transition to Medford High School. When new students enter, we help show them important places around the building and introduce them to teachers, staff, and other students. We also eat lunch together as a group when new students arrive and plan events a few times a month to do outside of school to help them feel welcome and make friends. Information: SkillsUSA provides opportunities for participating students to develop individually and improve teamwork, leadership and professional skills through education, training, service, and competition. SkillsUSA is a student leadership organization for career and technical students. It is a national organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations, including health occupations and for further education. SkillsUSA programs include local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills.

Arabic Club

Information: Our purpose is to generate a community of support for Arabic culture and language at MHS. This club will interest those who would like to learn about the Arabic culture and history of Arabic-speaking people. The club’s activities will consist of listening to Arabic music, discussing important events in history and their effects on the world, organizing our first annual international night and supporting the Arabic community both in and out of Medford High School. Mock Trial

Information: The MHS Mock Trial Team will participate in competitions with other Massachusetts high schools in partnership with the Massachusetts Bar Association. Students will collaborate in interpreting evidence and data, as well as building cases for an assigned criminal or civil trial. Court case materials are given in October, and school competitions will begin in January. Members of the Mock Trial Team will develop strong critical thinking and public speaking skills, as well as learn how to construct arguments supported by proof. Not only is Mock Trial fun, but it is also an excellent addition to any resume.

Information: Roots & Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute’s international and humanitarian program for young people. Our mission is to foster respect and compassion for all living things, to promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and to inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment. All Roots & Shoots members, from pre-school to university, demonstrate their care and concern for living things through service projects in their communities and on a global level. Roots & Shoots is guided by Dr. Jane’s philosophy that “every individual matters, every individual has a role to play, every individual makes a difference.” Roots & Shoots members learn the importance of caring for others and at the same time develop self-respect, self-confidence, and hope for the future. Information: The MHS Chorus is open to all students who enjoy singing. No audition is required. Students not enrolled in chorus class can still participate by attending after-school rehearsals. A schedule of after-school rehearsals for the fall will be announced shortly; e-mail Mr. Wray if you would like to receive the schedule. Concerts are held at least twice per year.

Drama Club

Information about Drama Club is published when auditions for plays are occurring.

Regular Meeting Day and Time: Drama Club will meet 2-4 times per month. When preparing for performances, Drama Club will meet according to a specific rehearsal schedule.

Information: As an organization, the Drama Club generates three major productions a year. We seek to incorporate as many students as possible over the course of the entire season. Students can be involved in a variety of positions; whether it is on the stage or behind the scenes. In addition, Drama Club will be organizing more than just stage performances this year. There is an audition process for on-stage roles for every production. There is also a general call for stage crew, usually about three weeks before performance.

Information: The goal of the photography club is to bring photographers of all skill levels together to help each other learn and develop. From iPhone photography to DSLRs, everyone is welcome to join. In the photography club, we will discuss ways to improve your photography, different techniques for taking photos, and how to work together to learn more about our shared interests. We will share our past photos with each other and take new ones at meetings outside of school, where possible. Overall, we will learn and grow as aspiring photographers.

Information: The MHS Reader’s Club is a different kind of book club where students may opt to use school owned Kindles (at no cost), bring their own eReader or choose a book in print. Students may read whatever he or she chooses in any genre or format. Students then share book talks about those choices in weekly meetings. The Reader’s Club provides the students of Medford High School with the opportunity to both share their love of reading and achieve a higher level of literacy by offering access to the Kindle eReader and the motivation of both free choice reading and the literary recommendations of their peers. All levels of reading and all genres of reading welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Writers’ Workshop

Information: Members of the Blue and White yearbook staff design and publish a 144-page full-color yearbook using an internet-based publishing program. Students can pursue their area of interest, whether it is layout and design, photography, business and advertising, writing – or all of the above. Though our class is currently full, new members are always welcome to work on the book after school. Joining the yearbook staff is an excellent way to get involved in your school community, and it looks great on your college application – former Blue and White staff members currently attend Harvard, Brown, Boston College, Providence College, the College of the Holy Cross, the University of Maryland, the University of Delaware, and the University of Massachusetts, among many others.

Math Team

Information: The math team is a club where we participate in math competitions. Most competitions are held after school in C320, although this year we will have the opportunity to compete with other schools at Harvard University. Besides doing mathematics, math team members perform community service and participate in other social activities. “Mathletes” enjoy learning and doing mathematics and can see the beauty in the discipline. Students of all mathematical abilities are welcome. There are no try-outs to become a member of the math team. The only prerequisite is that you enjoy mathematics.

MHS Science Team

Information: The Science Team is a member of the North Shore Science League (NSSL) of about thirty schools of the North Shore of Boston, from Chelsea to Amesbury and including Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The League meets at various schools on the second Tuesday of each month. Each meet consists of three events of no more than four students per event. Events span all fields of science, from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, to Engineering and Building. Students compete head-to-head in competitions that include lab-based events, stations work, pen and paper, and testing designs of built models.

Robotics Team

Information: The Robotics Team has been established to promote students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This is a club where students can have fun and experience exciting intellectual challenges after school. Students collaborate to design and build robots; also, they develop computer programming skills by writing strategic computer programs. In Robotics, students are encouraged to apply problem-solving, as well as critical and creative thinking skills. More time commitment will be required of students who would like to participate in the Botball Robotics Tournament. This tournament is scheduled during the month of February and March. Participation would be required for about nine weeks, including February break.

Information: This program is an opportunity for high school students to teach and expose local elementary school students to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field. By using our method STARS (Science, Technology, and Applied Research), we conduct experiments and mentor our future young leaders in science. The meetings and the lesson planning of the program will take place before and/or after school.
