Monthly Curriculum Updates
PreKindergarten
In December, the PreKindergarteners learned about Winter, Snow & Ice and Friendship.
Grade 1

Language Arts: We discussed Christopher Columbus and explorers. We also read many pumpkin books and learned about the lifecycle of a pumpkin. We have been also learning about the lifestyle of the pilgrims and the native Americans. Our Colonial Breakfast and performance will be held on Wednesday, November 25th.

Writing: In our daily journals, we are working on sentence structure and punctuation. First graders also wrote what they are thankful for.

Math: Our students are learning abouth pennies and nickels, addition, and time to the hour. We are counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. We are also learning how to estimate. We are also working on odd and even numbers, patterns and telling time to the half hour. McGlynn Math Day was Friday, November 20th, and each grade had many math activities planned for their class.

Second Step Program: This program helps students learn how to get along with others. We have been discussing feelings and how to manage them.

Our school nurses recorded our student’s weight and height. Volunteers from the Dentist office came to discuss the correct way to brush/floss our teeth. We talked about healthy snacks and why they are so good for our bodies.

Vowel sounds: Our emphasis has been on the short sound of “a” and “i”.

First graders learned about Veterans.

A food drive was organized and each child contributed by bringing in a monetary donation or food goods.
Grade 3/4

Language Arts: Students have been using various hands on, auditory, and visual means to explore the skills of predicting, sequencing, main idea and details, adjectives, verbs, and using context clues to better understand text. The students have been working on several writing pieces, as well as working on improving their sentence structure. They have continued with their weekly spelling and grammar studies.

Math: The students have been focusing on using coins to make change, as well as telling time to the nearest five minutes. All the students have been working on math skills that are on their own personal ability levels. Some of the students have begun their studies with multiplication, where some others have begun their memorization of doubles addition facts (such as 4 + 4, and 5+5).

Science: The students have begun their new unit of animal kingdoms. As a group, the students have identified the need of all animals. They have also explored the various aspects of animals that allow them to obtain their needs. This will soon transition into identifying learned and instinctive behaviors in animals.

Social Studies: The students have continued their study of the various states within our country. The students have been using visual, auditory, and hands on approaches in learning the about the landscape, cities and capitals, people and cultures, and entertainments of these states. In addition, the students have been using geographical vocabulary to navigate through various types of maps.
Grade 4

Science: Created cloud wheels to help forecast the weather and hands-on models of the atmosphere

Social Studies: Started to create landform books, working on regions of the U.S.

Math: Place value, sets of data, strengthening and practicing basic facts

Bonus! All 4th graders participated in a live webcast by author R. L. Stine (“Goosebumps”) in which they got to see him talk about how he creates his stories, and we actually participated in the creation of a scary story. We answered survey questions, and our answers were incorporated into his story.
Grade 5

In math we have started our unit on fractions: what is a fraction, finding parts of a whole, adding, subtracting, and multiplying.

In Science we are into our rocks and minerals unit. We have done fun labs exploring minerals and how to ientify them. We will also discuss the three different types of rocks and the rock cycle.

In Social Studies, we have begun the unit on the exploration of America. We will learn all about the explorers who first came to the Americas, starting with Columbus and Cortez.

We are looking forward to beginning our first classic, The Last of the Mohicans, when we come back from our winter holidays.

The fifth grade had a very special presentation from Dee Morris on December 11th. She talked with us
about the introduction of the Gypsy moth to Medford and then throughout United states, as well the Medford ecosystems. -
