CONTEMPORARY HEALTH ISSUES SPEAKER PROGRAM (Grades 9-12)
Guest speakers will address a myriad of health topics on a regular basis through the Health Department. The intent of this program is to reinforce vital information concerning health issues (i.e. alcohol and drugs, parenting skills, nutrition and sports, developing health relationships, and stress management).
PEER LEADER PROGRAM (Grades 10-12)
Students are encouraged to join this program designed to increase their knowledge concerning adolescent health issues and to improve their communication skills in order to relate effectively to their peers who may have questions about concerning health issues (i.e. how to deal with peer pressure, how to say “no,” where to go when they have problems). Peer leaders sponsor many activities, including presentations for Grades 7-12, a “drop-in and talk” center and assisting classroom teachers in Health Education.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS (Grade 11)
Health issues related to the major systems of the body will be studied in detail (e.g., the Respiratory System and smoking, emphysema, asthma, etc.-the Digestive System and eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia). CPR certification by the American Red Cross. A substance abuse prevention program will be stressed.
Standard – 2 Credits – 2 Periods per Cycle – Full Year
HEALTH AND WELLNESS (Grade 12)
This course will be a continuation of the Health and Wellness program taken as a junior. CPR certification by the American Red Cross. The development of a physical, intellectual, emotional and social ‘fitness” philosophy of life will be stressed. Discussions will range from alcohol-abuse prevention to teen-dating violence.
