Health Assisting

Hospitals in the United States have more than 100,000 vacant nursing positions, and that number is expected to rise to 340,000 by 2020.  To help stem the problem, students in the Health Care program are given a jumpstart on the skills needed to become registered nurses.  In the sophomore year, students learn to implement the HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) law.  This federal law assures that each patient is provided privacy for all personal information.  Sophomores also study basic first aid skills and cardiopulmonary resuscitation for adults, infants and children.  By the end of their junior year, the students are ready to sit for the Massachusetts certified nursing assistant (C.N.A.) examination.  Upon successful completion of the C.N.A., students will be integral members of the health care team.  Nursing assistants make valuable contributions to the nursing process that the professional nurse follows in assessing the client’s needs, planning interventions, implementing care, and evaluating outcomes.  In their senior year, students will continue to expand upon their skill knowledge with competencies such as providing and interpreting electrocardiograms (ekg’s), sterile techniques (essential for surgical assistants) and perfecting vital sign assessments.  All students in the Health Care program will have the invaluable opportunity to perform clinical rotations at area hospitals, long-term care facilities and with the Visiting Nurse’s Association.  With hands on experience, many students may decide to continue their education in the fields of nursing, radiology, respiratory therapy or other allied health fields.

Upon graduation, students are prepared for employment as nursing assistants in acute and long term care facilities, as well as home care agencies.
