Music Curriculum

Grades 6-8

Sing independently, on pitch and in tune, in steady accurate rhythm, with good posture, good diction, breath support and clear tone.

Sing with expression using appropriate dynamics: forte, piano, mezz0-forte, crescendos, and diminuendo.

Sing in two parts (partner songs, rounds, echo songs).

Perform with focus and ensemble consciousness.

Read basic notation such as whole, half, dotted half, quarter, dotted quarter, and eighth notes in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time.

Compose a melodic composition in double or triple meter using whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes and corresponding rests in treble and/or bass clefs.

Compose music in standard notation that is expressive, is written in phrases, indicates tempo, and uses accents and dynamics.

Notate a familiar melody using standard notation. The notation should show generally correct melody and pitch relations, rhythms, phrasing, time signature, articulations, and dynamics.

Listen to and analyze a (written) musical work. Cite 5-6 important features using correct music vocabulary; time signature, tempo, articulations, characteristics of melody (movement by steps or leaps), phrases, dynamics, rhythm patterns, key.
