Science Technology Engineering Program

The study of technology focuses on objects that are man-made. Technology is different than science in that science focuses on the study of the natural world. Both science and technology are included on the 8th grade science MCAS however. Although technology only accounts for approximately 1/8th – 1/10th of the questions on the MCAS in 8th grade, this is somewhat proportional to the amount of time studying each at the Andrews Middle School (120 weeks science studied over three years, 24 weeks technology studied over three years).

As technology focuses on objects that are man-made, we will attempt to construct projects in each grade in 2009 which reinforce essential technological concepts and offer the students an oppurtunity to master several standard sets. Here is the breakdown of the curriculum for each grade:

8th Grade: Students will construct bridges as bridges are a very important theme on the MCAS. The project will include a research component, drawings, and a proposal which needs to be accepted before construction. The idea is to reinforce the Engineering Design Process. The pages the students will focus on for most of the semester are attached to this page, as well as the grading scheme for the project.

7th Grade:Students will construct rockets as rockets are a major theme in the transportation technology standards. Students will be forced to closely follow directions and construct rockets according to a very specific set of instructions. After the students have completed their rockets, we will fire them off outside with a rocket launcher located in the Andrews Tech Lab. The pages the students will focus on for most of the semester are attached to this page, as well as the grading scheme for the project.

6th Grade: Students will construct mousetrap cars as vehicles are a major theme in the transportation technology standards. Students will be forced to closely follow directions and construct cars according to a very specific set of instructions. After the students have completed their cars, we will test their distance and length and allow students to redesign according to their results. The pages the students will focus on for most of the semester are attached to this page, as well as the grading scheme for the major project.
